Meet the Herbs: Holy Basil Alive
Herbs and medicinal plants have long been used to optimise overall health and well-being, and in this series we will take a deeper look at some of our favourite herbs for supporting health, like our Holy Basil Alive. Holy Basil (also known as Tulsi) is a green leafy plant native to Asia, it is one of the most sacred plants in India, and considered the ‘Queen of herbs’ for its rejuvenating properties.
Holy Basil originated in India where it has been used for over 3,000 years. In Aryuvedic medicine it is used as an adaptogen to counter life stresses. Hindu’s consider it a sacred plant, and it is often planted around Hindu shrines, and known as Tulsi which means the incomparable one. Traditionally, it has been used for anxiety and stress and is considered a tonic for mind, body and spirit. In traditional systems of medicine, different parts of tulsi — the leaves, stem, flower, root, seeds and even the whole plant — have been recommended for the treatment of bronchitis, respiratory conditions, skin issues, joint complaints and fever.
Holy basil is rich in a variety of active compounds, vitamins and minerals that may influence important body processes. Studies have found it contains compounds called ocimumosides and ocimarin which have anti-stress properties. It also contains eugenol which is widely believed to help combat many skin disorders, this aromatic compound is also said to elevate both mood and spirit- combatting stress and supporting mental clarity. Holy basil also contains other therapeutic components, including camphor, flavonoids and various terpenes, these compounds deliver a number of health benefits and can help support skin, respiratory and cardiovascular health.
Holy basil is a powerful antioxidant with demonstrated antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties.
Multiple scientific studies have found that supplementation with holy basil decrease stress hormone levels, corticosterone in particular, lower levels of which are associated with improved mental clarity and memory, and long-term, can reduce the risk of age-related mental disorders. It has also been shown to have anti-depressant and anti-anxiety properties.
Holy Basil is an adaptogen which helps the body cope when under stress and promotes mental balance. It is rich in antioxidants to defend the body, and helps protect organs and tissues against chemical stress from environmental toxins and physical stress.
