Meet the Fungi: Shiitake Mushroom

Herbs, fungi and medicinal plants have long been used to optimise overall health and well-being, and in this series we will take a deeper look at some of our favourites for supporting health. Shiitake mushroom has many health benefits and an excellent nutritional profile, it is rich in B-vitamins, vitamin D and all 8 essential amino acids. The name, Shiitake, is Japanese, and comes from the word “Shii” which is the name of the tree that the mushroom usually grows on.

History:
Traditionally used as a culinary mushroom, Shiitake’s properties have been researched in Japan since the 1960’s, and it was traditionally considered as the “elixir of life” by Japanese elders. It has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to support health and longevity.

Benefits:
Shiitake has high levels of B vitamins and is a plant based source of vitamin D. It has strong anti-microbial activity and the highest anti-candidal action among mushrooms. Shiitake mushrooms have three compounds that may support heart health including eritadenine, sterols and beta glucans. Beta glucans are also immune-modulators, so help to support our immune system and fight off infection.

Why should you use it?
Shiitake is a useful source of vitamin D, which is hard to come by within the diet. It also has as an ability to support the immune system. It is especially useful for digestive conditions and cardiovascular support. Shiitake is a great choice for the winter season with its anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Studies have shown that Shiitake kills only pathogenic microbes, leaving beneficial bacteria intact. Regular shiitake consumption has been shown to improve immunity and the production of immune cells.

Actives:

Shiitake contains the polysaccharide lentinan which protects DNA from oxidative damage and is a powerful anti-fungal useful against various viral and parasitic infections. It is also rich in immunologically active polysaccharides like beta glucans. Shiitake produces a number of anti-microbial compounds including eritadenine which also supports cardiovascular health alongside its plant sterol compounds.
