Meet the Fungi: Lions Mane Mushroom

Herbs, fungi and medicinal plants have long been used to optimise overall health and well-being, and in this series we will take a deeper look at some of our favourites for supporting health. Lions Mane is a revered medicinal mushroom, also called ‘the mountain priest mushroom’, it is often found growing on hardwood trees in temperate forests across the northern hemisphere including North America, Europe and Asia.

History:
Historically Lion’s Mane mushroom was reserved for royalty, but it has been used for centuries for its anti-microbial and immunological activity. In traditional Chinese medicine it was used as a tonic for supporting overall health and longevity. Buddhist monks were said to have used Lion’s Mane mushroom powder as a tea to enhance brain power and heighten their focus during meditation.

Benefits:
In recent years Lions Mane has been investigated for its beneficial effects on cognitive health. Lion’s Mane powder stimulates the production of nerve growth factor (NGF) which helps maintain the neurons which are brain cells responsible for helping us to process and transmit information, aiding learning and memory. It is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, and helps to modulate the immune system.

Why should you use it?
Lions Mane cognitive benefits make it an ideal choice for those suffering from cognitive issues, pain and neuropathy. It is also highly recommended if you are studying, or for general concentration and focus at work. Lion’s Mane powder is also beneficial for supporting the immune system, and is rich in anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial compounds which may support digestive health.

Actives:

Its unique properties are due to the two families of compounds it produces: the erinacines and the hericenones which have strong anti-bacterial activity and help stimulate the generation of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) which is a neuropeptide that helps to maintain neurons and optimal brain functioning. Lion’s Mane powder is also rich in anti-inflammatory compounds and antioxidants and contains a high amount of polysaccharides like beta glucans which support the immune system.
