Herbs for back to school support
September signals a time of fresh starts and new beginnings, with many of us heading back to school, university, or work after some much needed summer holidays. It can be difficult to get back into a routine, and to stay healthy this time of year, with stress levels high, but some simple changes can ensure you get back into the swing of things. Let’s look at our favourite herbs and fungi for back to school support…
Lion’s Mane: Lion’s Mane is the number one mushroom for cognitive functioning. If you are feeling a little foggy, or suffering from poor concentration or memory, then Lion’s Mane can help. Lion’s Mane has been researched for its effects on cognitive health. It stimulates the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) which helps to maintain the neurons, which are brain cells that help us to process and transmit information, supporting learning and memory. It helps to kick the brain back into gear and is our favourite mushroom for back to school support.
Rhodiola: Adaptogenic Rhodiola is a great herb for this busy time of year. Rhodiola is an adaptogen, meaning it can support us during stressful times, and regulate our nervous and immune system, protecting us from the damaging effects of stress. It has an anti-fatigue effect, helping to support concentration and reduce stress and anxiety.
Holy Basil: Another adaptogen, but more geared towards emotional forms of stress. It can also help to support cognitive functioning, bringing mental clarity and focus. It helps to decrease stress hormone levels, which helps to improve cognitive functioning. It’s also a great anti-viral, so can support our immunity at this time of year.
Shiitake: Our immune system can take a hit this time of year. Stress and the many bugs and illnesses going around this time of year can leave us open to getting sick. Shiitake has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and helps to support the immune system.
Maca: Uplifting and energizing, Maca can help you to find that get up and go. It can be tiring getting back into regular routine, so support your energy levels naturally with Maca. It is rich in energizing B-vitamins and trace minerals to support health too.
It’s important to focus on healthy habits and doing the basics at this time of year if you are heading back to school or work after a break. Start moving your bedtime gradually earlier and put in place sleep hygiene techniques to ensure you are well rested. Make time for regular activity, and make sure to get outside when you can for stress relieving benefits. Focus on eating a wide array of plant foods and fermented foods to feed your gut microbiome.
You can find many of these herbs in our Cognitive blend for brain function, as well as our Candi-X formula for immune support, these are both suitable for the whole family from age 6+. We also have our individual adaptogenic Alive range of kefir-kombucha fermented herbs to support the body during busy, stressful times.
