Healthy Travel Essentials
The summer holidays are finally here! Time for many of us to take a long earned break, and jet off to more exotic climates. Though travel should be a time for rest and relaxation, it can be quite stressful too, which is why like to support our body and mind during this busy time with some herbs and foods to keep us healthy, happy and able to enjoy our trip. Here are some of our favourite healthy travel essentials…
Ginger: Ginger is one of our top healthy travel essentials. It is an amazing remedy for nausea, and travel sickness, which can hit you hard if you are spending a lot of time on the road, or at sea. It’s also a great remedy for digestive upset and indigestion, soothing the gut and supporting motility.
Holy Basil: An excellent adaptogen to help the body cope with stress, helping to calm the mind, it has been shown to be effective for stress and anxiety, and is highly restorative for the nervous system. Holy Basil’s strong antioxidant content also offers protection from EMF and radiation which we can be exposed to during travel.
Ashwagandha: Another adaptogen to help the body adapt to stress. It has been shown to reduce levels of our stress hormone cortisol which can help us when we are feeling overwhelmed with travel plans. Ashwagandha can also help to support our sleep, which can be compromised with changing time zones and jet lag.
Chamomile: Travelling can affect your digestive system, taking you away from normal eating habits, which can be especially problematic for those with digestive issues and food sensitivities. Chamomile is the perfect carminative herb to soothe digestive symptoms, helping to relieve gas and bloating. It’s also a great calming herb for the evening, to help you drift off to a deep and restful sleep.
Shiitake: Time zone changes, sleep deprivation, alcohol and poor nutrition hit our immune system hard, and the last thing you want after planning your holiday all year is to come down with a sickness bug. We love shiitake for its ability to help the body fight off pathogens and support our immune response against them.
Chaga: Antioxidant rich Chaga is your best friend if you are going on a sun holiday. Sun exposure can cause free radical damage and premature ageing, and Chaga with its super dose of antioxidants can help us to fight that. It is also an excellent immune system supporter to keep you fighting fit while travelling.
These are just some of the many herbs and foods that we love for healthy travel. It can be hard while away to stick to a proper nutrition plan, maintain good sleep, and digestive health as well as look after your immune system, so give yourselves a little extra herbal support to make the most of your trip.
