Get Ready for Exam Season with Stress Busting Herbs

Exam season can be a time of extreme stress and intense pressure. Stress is a normal bodily response, and a little bit can support our performance, but when chronic it can affect our mental state, immune function and cognitive functioning.

We need to support our bodies through stressful periods with good diet and lifestyle choices. Ensure you are eating a well-balanced whole food diet which will give you consistent energy without any spikes in blood sugar, and make sure to avoid stimulants like caffeine and nicotine which can worsen anxiety. It is also vital to get enough restorative sleep, burning the midnight oil with late night cramming sessions can be detrimental as a lot of our consolidation of memory is done during sleep and it’s important for optimal learning. Exercise is a another great way of coping with stress, and even a few short minutes of walking outside can make all the difference. Yoga and Meditation can also help to calm your breathing and nervous system.

We can also use a range of medicinal herbs during exam season to keep us in good health, manage our stress levels, and support our immune function which can be lowered at this difficult time. Helping to ensure we are both mentally and physically prepared to take each exam. Adaptogenic herbs help to maintain the bodies systems during times of stress, protecting the body from the results of chronic stress and its effects.

Holy Basil is a wonderful adaptogenic herb to support cognitive functioning and protect the body from damage induced by stress. It helps to bring mental clarity and contains compounds that balance stress hormones and support the nervous and immune system. Studies have found it decreases stress hormone levels which helps to improve cognitive functioning.

Rhodiola is another adaptogen which can support the nervous system, immunity, memory, and energy levels. Research has shown that Rhodiola has an anti-fatigue effect, helping to support concentration and also support the immune system in those studying for exams.

Medicinal Mushrooms can also be used to support the body during this high pressured periods. Lions Mane mushroom is said to have been used by Buddhist monks to enhance brain power and heighten focus during meditation. It stimulates the production of nerve growth factor (NGF) which helps to maintain the neurons, which are brain cells responsible for helping us to process and transmit information, aiding learning and memory.

Our other favourite herbs to support the brain are Turmeric, Gotu Kola and Green Tea which are all rich in anti-oxidants and help to improve circulation to the brain, supporting cognitive functioning, memory and offering protection to the brain.

At Living Nutrition we have formulated our kefir-kombucha fermented Cognitive blend to support and protect the brain during times of emotional stress. We combine some of our favourite herbs mentioned above including Lions Mane mushroom, Holy Basil, Gotu Kola, Green Tea, and Turmeric to offer the best herbal support for cognitive functioning.
