Chocolate and Maca Energy Bars Recipe
Maca is a root vegetable that grows at high altitudes in the Andes mountains of Peru and Bolivia, it is a great addition to food and drink recipes and today we are sharing our chocolate and maca energy bars recipe featuring our Maca Alive fermented supplements.
Maca is an adaptogen which helps the body to adapt when under stressful situations and brings the body back into balance. Our Maca Alive fermented supplements are nutrient rich, containing amino acids, minerals such as calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous and zinc, certain vitamins such as B1, B2 and C, and they also contain iodine and several essential fatty acids. Maca has been used for generations in South America and is mostly consumed cooked, and often fermented into a drink called maca chichi. We use gelatinized maca which we ferment into a much more nutrients rich and potent form. We use 3 different types of maca- yellow, red and black as they have slightly different health properties to make up our organic herbal supplements.

Maca has a rich malty flavour, and combines really well with chocolate, for the perfect pre-workout energy kick. Snack bars are convenient for travel or to quickly grab on the run, but most are full of less than ideal ingredients and can be very expensive. So if you have the time and inclination you can whip something up very easily and cheaply at home that will be much better for you too
This recipe is pretty simple, make sure you have really good quality soft medjool dates, otherwise soak your dates beforehand and drain before blending. Try our chocolate and maca energy bars recipe…
200g Medjool Dates
2 Tbsp Nut Butter
2 Tbsp of Coconut Oil
2 Tbsp Chia Seeds
2 Tbsp Cacao/Cocoa Powder
4 Maca Alive Capsules
1/4 cup Shredded Coconut
2 Cups Oats
Pinch of Salt
- Whizz the medjool dates in a food processor until they come together into a sticky ball and keep processing a little bit longer, until this separates into a paste.
- Add the nut butter (we like almond), and coconut oil and continue to process, until it comes together as a paste.
- Add chia seeds, maca alive powder from the capsules, cacao or cocoa powder, shredded coconut, oats, and a pinch of salt, along with a dash of water and whizz until the mixture comes together.
- Press into a greased or lined pan and pop in the fridge for a few hours to firm up, then slice into bars. Store in the fridge.
This makes 12 good size chocolate and maca energy bars. They are perfect for during, or before a workout with a good mix of quick and slow release carbohydrates, energizing B-vitamins from the Maca Alive herbal supplements, with a little bit of healthy fat and plant based protein. The combination makes for a delicious whole food bar to help you power through those workouts, or busy days.
