5 Reasons to try Holy Basil Alive…

Holy Basil (also known as Tulsi) is a green leafy plant native to Asia, it is one of the most sacred plants in India, and considered the ‘Queen of herbs’ for its rejuvenating properties. In Ayurvedic medicine it is used as an adaptogen to counter life stresses, and it has many traditional uses, let’s take a look at our top 5 reasons to try Holy Basil…

1: Adaptogenic: Traditionally, Holy Basil has been used for anxiety and stress and is considered a tonic for mind, body and spirit. Studies have found it contains compounds called ocimumosides and ocimarin which have anti-stress properties. It also contains eugenol, which is an aromatic compound that is said to elevate both mood and spirit, combating stress and supporting mental clarity.  It is rich in antioxidants to defend the body, and protect organs and tissues against chemical stress from environmental toxins and physical stress. In a 2017 systematic review, authors concluded Holy Basil may be an effective adaptogen to counter the stresses of modern living.

2: Respiratory health: In traditional systems of medicine, different parts of tulsi — the leaves, stem, flower, root, seeds and even the whole plant — have been recommended for the treatment of bronchitis and respiratory conditions. It is considered a beneficial respiratory, anti-inflammatory and expectorant herb, good for relieving congestion and postnasal drip, and traditionally used as a cough remedy. Its compounds including camphene, eugenol and cineole help provide relief from congestion and other symptoms of respiratory disorders.

3: Anti-microbial: Holy basil has demonstrated antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. The leaves of this easily available plant are rich in phytonutrients, chlorophyll, vitamins, and minerals, as well as eugenol, a bioactive compound that has anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Apigenin, a compound derived from Holy Basil has also shown effectiveness against H1N1 and swine flu.

4: Cognitive support: Another benefit of Holy Basil’s antioxidant properties is that it could help with brain health. Multiple scientific studies have found that supplementation with Holy Basil decreases stress hormone levels, in particular corticosterone, lower levels of which are associated with improved mental clarity and memory, and long-term, can reduce the risk of age-related mental disorders. It has also been shown to have anti-depressant and anti-anxiety properties. One study found that adults who took Holy Basil regularly for 15 days experienced a boost in cognitive function compared to participants who were given a placebo, although more research is needed to confirm this benefit.

5: Immunity: Holy Basil is also a useful immune supporting herb. In studies it has been shown to induce proliferation of T cytokines and T lymphocytes, and also increas levels of NK cells count after ingestion. These cells are vital for our immune defence and response.
